Sixth Form: Extended Project (AS)

This is a stand alone AS worth up to 70 UCAS points.  The course actively encourages students' aspirations to achieve in higher education, by developing, and providing evidence of, the skills that universities look for.  There is evidence that the Russell Group universities in particular are increasingly interested in students who have undertaken the Extended Project.  The course gives students the freedom to choose their own topic area and devise their own research programme, which may or may not be related to their A-level studies.  In this respect, it gives experience of specialised, deeper study than is possible in A-level subject areas.

The Extended Project offers stretch and challenge to students wishing to develop their independent learning and research skills.  Examples of previous projects include:

  • How has English affected the German language?
  • The policy and practice of hospitals with regard to MRSA
  • The coalition government's economic policies
  • The development of social networking
  • The history of road biking
